Jemma was recently involved in an event to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Flame to the UK for London 2012. After a lot of commitment and dedication to gain experience in Sports Physiotherapy over the past 5 years, being involved this summer means a great deal to this Manchester Physio. Here she describes what it was like to hold one of the London 2012 Gold Medals and the excitement of being involved as a Sports Physiotherapist at the games.

14th June 2012 Finland 0 – 3 Great Britain (23-25, 21-25, 23-25)
GB played their fourth game of the tour in Orivesi and made it four wins from four with an emphatic 3-0 victory against Finland. The starting line up was Wicks, Beattie, Carter, Laybourne, Leaf, Michel and Bertelli as libero.

GB started well, playing a quick offence with Leaf, Carter and Beattie all contributing on a regular basis to take the first set 23-25. Good variation in offence and excellent passing led by Bertelli were key reasons for the set win. Taylor delivered coming on as a sub and scoring 2 service aces with the score in the 20’s
In the second set, GB started on the front foot again with the serve receive unit passing well and providing the foundation for Lucy Wicks to run the offence. Again, it was Leaf, Carter and Beattie scoring the points (15 between them this set). Leading 12-16 at the second technical time-out GB pushed to a comfortable 21-25 win. Continue reading →

GB prepared for their third game of the 5 match series, with an excellent training session on the morning working on offence and speed in the attack. Finland 2 – 3 Great Britain
(25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 8-15)
The GB Women began their 10-day series against the Finnish National Team in Turku, approximately 40 minutes from Helsinki. The trip has been planned to replicate the Olympic Games schedule of 5 matches, one match every other day with a training/recovery day in between. Continue reading →
