‘Rowdy’ fans help Aachen to cause huge upset!

Last night was an exciting one for Ci and Lucy, and their “Ladies in Black” Alemannia Aachen. They took on Smart Allianz Stuttgart, a top league team and winner of last year’s prestigious Liga Pokal Cup, at home in front of a-thousand-plus rowdy fans.

Right from the beginning the underdog Alemannia showed no fear, pulling away to a comfortable 16-11 lead. But after a string of unlucky serves and unforced errors, they lost the first set 22:25. This was no deterrent for the next set, in which solid blocking and combination plays put the girls on top 25:21.

After the ten-minute break the team was refreshed and ready for another fight, which was necessary in the third set, where the sought-after ‘set point’ flipped back and forth several times, before the girls put it away at 29:27 with strong serving.

The fourth set started a bit shaky at 3:6, but the team stayed cool, and pushed forward to a 7:6 lead, and 16:12 at the second technical time out. A final score of 25:19 resulted in a 3:1 victory over the favourite, and a well-deserved sense of satisfaction for Alemannia Aachen’s team, coach, and enthusiastic fans. See stats from the match here. This win secured the team’s place as one to watch this season in the Bundesliga, following the comments of Stuttgart’s coach (also German National Team co-Coach) that Alemannia “is certain to be a top team this season.” Ci Michel score 15 points in the match, she comments…

“Im really excited about this win, its always fun to play at home in front of our great crowd, and we have put ourselves in a good position to go on the road against Suhl this weekend.

A big win against a team of this calibre so early in the season shows that we are not a team to be taken lightly. And it is the fighting spirit, experience and confidence we take away from games like this, that we can bring back to GB over the summer.”
