Both Lucy Wicks and Lynne Beattie received extra Christmas gifts this year with both collecting great wins over the Christmas period.
On 21st December Aachen defeated top of the league, and one of the favourites for the Bundesliga title, Schwerin SC in one of their most memorable victories.
In the cauldron that is the home of Alemmania Aachen, the atmosphere was intense & the team responded with a strong start, from which they never looked back. Excellent serving made the Schwerin play predictable & they struggled in offence, with Aachen mounting 21 blocks in the 4 sets.
It was an all round team performance with Lucy and outside hitter Rita Lilliom highlighted as outstanding. Aachen won the match 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 25-11), a perfect early Christmas for the GB setter. Unfortunately middle player Ciara Michel injured her ankle and is expected to be out of action until the middle of January. See images from the match here.
For Lynne Beattie, Christmas Day was a little different this year…..in the Italian sunshine and training. Boxing Day saw San Vito take on MasterGroup Matera. Strong serve and block play allowed comfortable victories in the first two sets with the home team winning 25-13, 25-15. Matera came back strong in the 3rd set and led 19-9 but San Vito were desperate for this win and showed phenomenal character and excellent serve and block play to come back into the set and unbelievably took the next 14 points to lead 23-19. The set was theirs 25-20 and so was the match 3-0. A superb win for San Vito to take them into 2011.
