The first match after Christmas saw Alemannia Aachen take on SC Potsdam who were lying just below them in the league table. In front of 1413 spectators, the biggest crowd Aachen had ever seen, they managed to get another home victory. Audrey Cooper, GB Head Coach, was also in the crowd so a good result for her to watch.
The first set was point for point with Aachen leading by one at both technicals and taking the set 25-23. Potsdam came back strong in the second set and Aachen struggled with their service pressure. Trailing 11-16 at the second technical Aachen managed to fight back but not quite enough with Potsdam taking the set 25-22.
Aachen never really got into their normal rhythm but managed to hold off Potsdam due to the aggression of their outside hitters. They won the next 2 sets 25-22 and 25-21. This keeps them 6th in the league with 4 wins and 2 loses. See stats for the match here.
Lucy Wicks picked up MVP for the match. As already mentioned Audrey Cooper was watching the match and was pleased with what she saw from Lucy..
“Lucy demonstrated leadership and composure in a relatively scrappy match, she mended exceptionally well making good choices in her offence strategy. She had an air of authority, organisation and presence in the team which for me warranted her MVP for the match. It is a great level of volleyball and I can see that Lucy is rising to the challenge in all areas of her game. If she continues to work like this, it is a great sign for the GB team “
The next game for Aachen will be a tough test, away to Vilsbiburg on Sat 8th January, who are currently third in the table. This is also the opposition for Janine Sandell in the CEV cup on Thursday 6th Jan so hopefully Aachen will have the chance to take an away win. Unfortunately Ciara Michel is still out with her ankle injury and she will hopefully be back on court for the next home game.
