Allez les filles - GB middles prep for new season in France

Go girls!

GB middle players Grace Carter and Rachel Newton have yesterday started training with their respective clubs for the 2010-11 season.

Grace Carter, an ever-present in the Euroleague this year, just turned 21 years old, will be playing for Olympic Terville Florange in the French DEF league (same as Rachel Bragg) next season.

The team were very eager to secure the young GB middle blocker to ensure a direct return to top level volleyball in France. Likewise, Grace is looking forward to her first season playing professional volleyball…

“I think this is a good move for me, playing for a good club who are ambitious and have good players already in their squad. I’m looking forward to testing myself, improving and playing lots of matches… hopefully helping the team back into the Pro A league.”

Rachel Newton continues her speedy progress as an international volleyball player by signing for Quimper Volley 29 for the coming season, in the French DEF.

Rachel was introduced to volleyball through the Sporting Giants programme in 2007 and since then has been training under the guidance of GB Women’s head coach Audrey Cooper as part of the full time programme in Sheffield. Having only been playing the sport for just over 2 years, Rachel made her GB debut in the European Championships earlier this year and will now commence her first season as a pro player…

“I am excited about playing for Quimper and playing volleyball professionally. I want to continue learning and improving to help establish myself in the GB team”

Quimper is not completely unknown to Rachel, having played against the team in a GB scrimmage match in January 2010. It was also the home of GB players Lucy Wicks, Rachel Laybourne and Stacy O’Connor last season.
